Tips and tricks on how to get the most out of your candles

First Burn

The first burn of your candle is the most important of all. Always burn the candle for long enough to allow the wax to melt across the entire surface and to the edges of the container. This ensures even burning for the subsequent burns and will prevent tunnelling occurring.

Wick Trimming

Trim your wick to 5mm before each burn to encourage a steady flame and even burn. Keeping your wick trimmed will limit the wick sooting and mushrooming.

If the wick has moved during burning, make sure to reposition your wick to the centre of the candle during or after burning.

Safety

Do not burn your candle below 1.5cm of wax remaining in the jar. You might feel like you don’t want to waste the remaining wax but lighting a candle without enough wax can overheat the jar as the flame nears the base and cause heat damage to the container.

Storage

Store your candle out of direct sunlight in a cool and dry place. Soy wax is sensitive to heat and light so take particular care in the summer and make sure to put the lid on the candle and store away from window sills and don’t leave them outdoors or anywhere there is direct sunlight.

Reuse

Once the candle is finished, clean out your jar with hot soapy water, rinse and dry. Your amber glass jar is now ready to be repurposed in any way you wish.

Our favourite ways to repurpose our small candle jars are for spice jars and the large make a great salt caddy for the kitchen. They are also great for storing loose leaf tea, propagating plants, as a vase and bathroom storage. Options are limited only to your imagination!
